    Amazing how good the 32X version is. It looks like an early Playstation game, not a late Genesis game

    Fun fact: Originally, Virtua Racing/Virtua Formula was never going to be released because they wanted the hardware to grow to give fully textured polygons, but the game was so great for its time that they finally decided to release it, in mini and full sized, full speech from commentator, motion controlled F1 cars. The former idea, though, turned into its succesor, Daytona USA after investing millions for a flight-simulator graphics chip to be put on the Model 2 board.
    If you look it that way, yes, VR was a test run for their 3D graphic board.

    The polygon power of the SVP was 300-500 polygons a frame, not per second. So this chip is estimated to be somewhere about 6500. And some homebrew folk figure its capable of much more. In the 10k/s range if properly coded.

    • @grantexploit5903
      @grantexploit5903 Год назад

      Yeah, I was about to comment (despite this being a very old video of his) that the 300 to 500 polygons per second can't be accurate-I mean, if you're being very liberal with how you qualify a rendered polygon (to exclude filling and line-culling), then there's a demo of a spinning 3D cube for the *Atari 2600* that runs at that speed.

    How could I've forgotten about this one? I didn't play it on the MD back in the day, but last year I found a copy for 10 € in a shop and I didn't think twice. I have to say it must have looked quite impressive on its time, and, really, it's too bad Sega didn't go the Nintendo way and tried to develop more - and cheaper - SVP games for the MD while focusing on the Saturn instead of developing that ill-fated 32X. But, well, as Earth Wind & Fire sang, that's the way of the world.

    "The Nintendo Switch port is part of the SEGA AGES collection and it looks and runs exactly like the arcade. That's because it pretty much is the Arcade version, all thanks to M2 who somehow found the source code of the original arcade game at a collegue's old computer. This runs at a blistering 60FPS and can have 4 players playing at the same time, however the game can allow up to 8 players but the downside to that is that it drops back to the regular 30FPS cap, you can also play this online against other players."

      It's crazy but the super fx was able to draw more polygons with more colours. This shows what amazing coding and hardware design can do. Yes on paper the fx maybe faster, by god I remember how intense v.racer was.
      I want to type Nintendo are donkeys to partner with but Sega did a similar thing with sgi. Can you imagine if Sega hadn't been so childish and worked with the Americans? We'd have no N64 but a send version of it.
      It's really great and slightly sad when the heads of companies let their ego shadow the product. An atari NES, a Sony & Nintendo playstation / snes cd add on. The b4 mentioned sgi Sega machine and and so on.
      PS, i always thought AM2 with their logo meant. _ARCADE MACHINE 2 U_

    Actually a very playable 3D racing game on the Genesis, very faithful to the original acknowledging the hardware limitations, the music is pretty cool, the frame rate it's very lightly choppy, unlike the SNES's 3D racing/action games, ultra choppy, almost unplayable. The 32X is a very enhanced version of the genesis, The Saturn version drives like a 1991 F1 Ferrari, so is not going to be very loved by Alain Prost haha :D, but the graphics look like the arcade almost exactly but a little down in the resolution, the other cars are not very special to look at but it's a nice addition. The PS2 definitely I will get, looks beautiful and fun but a little bit dark. Overall they all are nice ports, but I have to give the most credit to the Megadrive for the best result due the system specs.

    I notice the original arcade version clearly recreates F1 liveries of that time. The player car could be a loosely based McLaren, I spotted a Ferrari, Benetton, Tyrrell, Larousse, Footwork Arrows, maybe a Brabham... the game ages itself pretty accurately lol

  • @edumafra82
    @edumafra82 7 лет назад +1

    The arcade version was really impressive by the time, even the PC's F1 Grand Prix from Microprose hadn't such graphics.
    WTF they did with the Saturn version? The car sounds like todays vacuum cleaner F1s! Even the Genesis port sounds more closely to the F1 cars by that time.

      I saw one of those and I do remember it looking odd. Was it true 16:9 I wonder?

    • @justanotheryoutubechannel
      @justanotheryoutubechannel 4 года назад +1

      Retro Core The hardware runs at a resolution of 496x384, regardless of if the cabinet is configured for 4:3 or 16:9 display, so in both modes it uses non-square pixels. On the original CRT displays it would look great, but with wider pixels. On an LCD monitor the image would look distorted and shimmery however. If the cabinet was set for the wrong aspect ratio in the service menu it would also look distorted, since the game renders polygons with a wider FOV in 16:9 mode and has different UI elements which are designed to be stretched anamorphically to 16:9. Basically, it’s 16:9 widescreen squeezed into 4:3, and then stretched back out to 16:9 by the CRT display, but it is the correct 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio and not just 4:3 stretched.

    Great review, I didn't know the 32x had an advantage in the controls. The graphics are good enough to justify calling it the best over-all experience. Curiously enough, I had a similar experience with Out Run, while I own the game in SMS, MD, PCE and SAT (the latter being the all time best on paper) I end up always playing the PCE version to death.
    It has balanced difficulty which actually allow you to push throguh the different routes (and see all the endings) without making you want to throw the pad at the screen like the Sat version does (no problem if you just have a few "let's check this game" runs, but try pushing for all the endings and you'll know what I mean).

    I had hoped for the Saturn to be the king of all the ports, but it's second-rate to the 32X version. While the Saturn version has more car types, in which is a good thing, some of the cars just don't control right.
    Still not a bad port, nonetheless.

    I bought Virtua Racing for the Genesis, brand new back in the day and was floored. Sega should have invested more into the SVP, and not bothered with the 32X addon.

    • @Loggydogg1
      @Loggydogg1 8 лет назад +1

      I think their thinking behind it was to make a hardware add on that could do basically what the svp chip could do (way better tho) therefore not every game would be $100. So basically you buy the hardware for a few hundred dollars then pay normal price for the games.

    I remember Brighton Pier having the full scale, four or five linked up, hydraulic cabinets (F1 Cockpits). Didn't play/handle as well as the normal sit down version though. It was £2 at the time too. Virtua Fighter was 50p.
    The Saturn version I found utterly unplayable, a complete bodge job. The 32X version, I think had it all and then some. Having said that, I haven't had a chance to play the PS2 version. (I don't think it was ever released in the UK).

    • @sturmwind1180
      @sturmwind1180 10 лет назад

      I'm not sure. It's possible. But I know that they held on to, and kept the linked Virtua Racing well beyond it's time. It was that popular. And that much of a spectacle. The 8-Player Daytona may have been installed in one of the arcades down by the Grand Hotel. Along the coast, Portsmouth had the huge Daytona set-up. The 6-player Virtua Racing. The full size Ridge Racer, using the donor Mazda MX5, and the full size Starblade like Galaxian 3/Theatre-6, 6 player laser-disc polygonal shooter.

    Am I the only one who doesn’t like the controls on the 32x version? The video says it is improved from the Gen/MD game, but to me it feels less responsive or something. Also, it seems like the PS2 version has an analog calibration problem. Every time I start a race, it pulls to the left, and I tried 3 different DS2’s so it doesn’t seem to be the controller’s fault. After I move the stick all the way left and right, it re-centers itself and the problem goes away.

    Megadrive version withe the SVP was great for its time - shame about the MD's native low resolution and colour pallete - would have been better with a bit higher resolution and a more diverse colour palette - the same thing affects the 32X version to some extent although better in both than the MD.

    • @aryinc
      @aryinc 8 лет назад

      true, dithering is Always ugly but was a way to shade away the colour limit of the genesis. if like anyone would use rf still ''rf is really ugly'' 32x should have been made instaed of the sega cd wich actually is just a genesis with cd audio and video clips.

      The Genesis / Mega Drive does have quite a low / limited on-screen colour pallete compared to many 16bit systems - Games on the TG16/PCE often featured more colour than many MD games - true many well programmed Mega Drive games like the Technosoft titles were very colourful considering its limitations.
      Its the sprite colour limitations on the MD that were it real weakness in many of its arcade conversions - like the version of OutRun on MD - the colours were all wrong.
